What is Bird in the Hand?

Bird in the Hand is an objection to the cost of living. 

It is a partnership between three people - George, Reuben and Sam - motivated by one goal: to feed Kiwis and their families healthy and delicious fast food, as cheaply as possible.

It is an experiment to see how cheap is possible and whether the collective buying power of local neighbourhoods can be harnessed to unlock value through volume. 

It is our attempt to stick it to the supermarket duopoly. At the end of the day, we can't compete with them on cost of ingredients, but we can fight them on convenience, taste and value because we believe that: 

A Bird in the Hand is worth two in the bush.

Why rotisserie chicken?

Rotisserie chicken may be entirely unique in its ability to optimise for price, health and taste:

1. Chicken is the cheapest AND healthiest mainstream meat;​

2. The rotisserie method of cooking is highly automated and engineered for scale, reducing the labour required to produce meals; and

3. Chicken just tastes better when cooked for nearly 2 hours against an open flame after being brined and cured for 72 hours prior.

What is the plan?

Opening in September 2025, we will run a proof of concept out of our purpose-built container kitchen to determine how cheap is possible and to find product-market fit. 

If we can prove the model, we will roll-out Bird in the Hand to more Christchurch neighbourhoods and beyond as soon as possible. 

And eventually, our vision is to feed families all around New Zealand healthier and cheaper.

Our Vision

Our vision is an alternative way of providing food that replaces hospitality with scale - preparing food on a bulk and "just-in-time" basis - making it substantially cheaper than traditional takeaways. 

Like outsourcing your home kitchen, but together with your entire neighbourhood, to get bang for your buck that couldn't be achieved alone (Power to the People!)

The result: a complete, healthy dinner for less than the price of fish'n'chips.
